Johannes Schouten was born in 1955 in Berowra, NSW. He initially trained as a carpenter and cabinet maker before completing a Diploma of Visual Arts in Cairns in 2019.
Johannes has an enduring love of timber and draws on his extensive carpentry skills to create sculptural works that are made from wood while resembling objects such as steel spanners, screw drivers and other tools and objects. Through these objects, Johannes explores ways of incorporating repurposed materials to give a deeper dimension and meaning to his highly fashioned sculptural works.
Johannes was selected for inclusion in the Cairns Art Gallery’s 2021 FNQ Contemporaries exhibition and has subsequently participated in a number of group exhibitions in and around Cairns.
