Portraits must be submitted digitally online and must be accompanied with an artist statement – this is the story of the relationship between the artist and their subject.
Only the selected 24 finalists will be asked to send or deliver their original artwork to the Gallery.
The portrait must be of a person who is special to you – someone who is known to you and who knows you and plays a significant role in your life
Entrants must reside in the Cairns Regional Council Shire.
Prizes are provided with thanks to sponsor ANZ bank.

Exhibition
Finalists from each category will be exhibited at the Court House at the Cairns Gallery Precinct and on the Gallery website.
One winner will be chosen in each category.
Artworks that received an honourable mention are displayed on the Gallery website
Prizes
Each of the four winners will receive: a gift card of $200 from ANZ and an Archibald 20 catalogue (valued at $16) – total prize value is $216.
Judging
The theme is a portrait of a person who is special to the entrant, who is known to the entrant and who plays a significant role in their life.
Entries to the 2021 competition will be judged by Gallery Director Andrea May Churcher and artist Andrew Bonneau, himself an Archibald Prize finalist, according to the following criteria: the relevance of the submitted artwork to the theme, as decided by the judges; artistic interpretation of the theme, as decided by the judges; originality of the submission.
