Join exhibiting artists Naomi Hobson, Tommy Pau, Ryan Presley, Janet Fieldhouse for a morning of discussion and insight into their arts practice and their latest solo exhibitions.

Moderated by Tina Baum, Curator, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, National Gallery of Australia.

Featuring new works  further exploring the subject of Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait Islander cultural charms used traditionally for personal, ceremony and/or religious purposes.

 

Naomi Hobson, Life on the River

Bringing together a series of new photographs taken during the wet season, the images capture Coen’s vibrant river culture and the relationships between the people and Wukaanta – The Coen River.

 

Robert (Tommy) Pau, Ilan Oman

25 May – 4 August 2024

Ilan Oman explores themes of ilan pasin - island way - how life was and still is practised in the Torres Strait, particularly through the matriarchal line.

 

Ryan Presley, Mongrel

1 June – 25 August 2024

In Ryan’s large-scale paintings, identity, politics, power imbalance and history are constantly inter-woven.

 

Ilan Oman, Life on the River and Material Culture have been supported through Cairns RSL Club Artist Fellowship Awards.
